Just off the road on the way to snorkeling on highway 160 is St. Benedict’s Catholic Church but all the locals call it the Painted Church.
It is a picturesque gothic style church among the tropical flora and fauna. It dates back to the 1800’s. Father John Velge dedicated himself to painting the church between 1899 and 1904. The church receives its nickname from all the amazing paintings that have been created on its walls, ceilings, and pillars. The alter is festooned with tropical flowers such as anthuriums and ginger. The church is very quiet and about 30 pews take up most of the floor space. The posts are painted while and red like a barber shop poles and the ceilings are a vivid blue and green design. Among the many paintings that are depicted on the walls is a scene from Hell, The Temptation of Christ and the Appearance of Christ to St. Francis. Outside is a cemetery that is definite Hawaiian style. The crosses and statues are all covered with leis and tropical flowers. Some of the leis are flowers and some are shells. On the lawn to the cemetery is a Statue of Virgin Mary she is also covered with shell leis as is a faithful statue that sits praying at her feet. As you walk in or out of the walkway to the Painted Church you will see a souvenir stand that is unmanned. You can buy Christmas ornaments, religious medals, key chains, and pins here, some are hand made; an honesty box is placed behind the trinkets and the money goes to contributing to the food pantry and the care and maintenance of the grounds of St. Benedict’s church. You can also contribute to the upkeep of the church by the use of a donation box found inside of the building.
