With
its resistance to urbanization, rough sea-drenched coast, and stubborn
maritime culture, Maine is in a world all its own. Okay, so there
is a bunch of outlet malls. But otherwise the wild woods of the
north, the parade of lakes that stretch across the state into New
Hampshire and the mountains that extend into Quebec let you know
that the state is one of the country’s most distinctive locales.
